Myopia is a growing concern on a global level. In certain areas of Asia, up to 90% of school children are affected. In Japan, progressive myopia represents the third leading cause of blindness. Most interestingly, myopia is most often due to an abnormal growth of the scleral portion of the eye. The sclera is composed of collagen, similar to the cornea. Theoretically, cross-linking the sclera might influence this axial growth of the eye – and might some day be a means suppress the onset of myopia. This is a fascinating research field, and the proof-of-principle has already been given: the sclera can indeed be stiffened via UV cross-linking.
