Podem distorcer a forma da c\u00f3rnea, reduzir a sua transpar\u00eancia, ou ambas, provocando vis\u00e3o turva e desconforto visual. Estes dep\u00f3sitos desenvolvem-se frequentemente em resposta a uma irrita\u00e7\u00e3o de longa data, como uma inflama\u00e7\u00e3o cr\u00f3nica ou d\u00e9cadas de uso de lentes de contacto. Os n\u00f3dulos podem afetar a vis\u00e3o, reduzindo a transpar\u00eancia da c\u00f3rnea e distorcendo a sua forma.<\/p><p>Ao exame, os n\u00f3dulos de Salzmann aparecem como \u00e1reas elevadas na c\u00f3rnea e podem ser claramente visualizados com a tomografia de coer\u00eancia \u00f3tica (OCT). Na figura apresentada, a eleva\u00e7\u00e3o esbranqui\u00e7ada na parte inferior do exame corresponde a um destes n\u00f3dulos. A doen\u00e7a progride lentamente, muitas vezes ao longo de muitos anos, e pode inicialmente passar despercebida at\u00e9 surgirem sintomas
