Esta era a pergunta a que o investigador do ELZA, Dr. Nanji Lu, estava a tentar responder (1). Para o fazer, realizou um estudo que examinou 622 olhos de 622 pacientes com diagn\u00f3sticos j\u00e1 conhecidos. Alguns tinham c\u00f3rneas normais e os restantes tinham queratocone avan\u00e7ado (AKC), queratocone precoce (EKC), quer a fase mais precoce do desenvolvimento do queratocone e a mais dif\u00edcil de diagnosticar: queratocone sub-cl\u00ednico ou \"forme-fruste\" (FFKC).<\/p>\n<p>Nanji e os seus colaboradores utilizaram mapas tomogr\u00e1ficos da c\u00f3rnea (forma e espessura) obtidos a partir de imagens OCT, combinados com dados de resist\u00eancia biomec\u00e2nica da c\u00f3rnea obtidos a partir de um ton\u00f3metro de sopro de ar (que emite um sopro de ar para o olho e uma c\u00e2mara de alta velocidade regista e mede a forma como a c\u00f3rnea muda de forma em resposta \u00e0 deflex\u00e3o do ar). Uma vez que os investigadores j\u00e1 sabiam qual o tipo de ceratocone que estes olhos apresentavam, puderam alimentar os dados da OCT e do ton\u00f3metro de ar comprimido com um programa de intelig\u00eancia artificial (IA)\/aprendizagem autom\u00e1tica que, em seguida, refinou progressivamente um modelo de diagn\u00f3stico, ao ponto de conseguir detetar o FFKC com maior precis\u00e3o do que os m\u00e9todos existentes baseados na tomografia da c\u00f3rnea.<\/p>\n<p>A import\u00e2ncia da dete\u00e7\u00e3o precoce do ceratocone n\u00e3o pode ser subestimada: a doen\u00e7a tende a ser progressiva e a progress\u00e3o do ceratocone est\u00e1 associada a uma perda de vis\u00e3o cada vez maior. Um procedimento cir\u00fargico, o cross-linking da c\u00f3rnea (CXL), pode parar a progress\u00e3o do ceratocone, mas n\u00e3o tende a recuperar a vis\u00e3o perdida at\u00e9 esse momento, o que significa que quanto mais cedo for detectado o ceratocone progressivo, mais a progress\u00e3o pode ser evitada atrav\u00e9s da utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de CXL precoce.<\/p>\n<p>O Diretor M\u00e9dico do Instituto ELZA, Prof. Farhad Hafezi, afirmou: \"Estamos orgulhosos por ver o trabalho da nossa p\u00f3s-doutorada, a Dra.
