ELZA’s Role in the Retina

At the ELZA Institute, we provide advanced diagnostics and personalized treatment for diseases of the retina and macula. Our retina services now include both medical and surgical care, supported by the expertise of Dr. Andrea Oleñik Memmel, a board-certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery.

Understanding the Retina

The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, essential for converting light into visual signals. At the center lies the macula, which governs sharp, central vision. Damage to this area – from age, vascular disease, or degenerative processes – can lead to progressive, and sometimes irreversible, vision loss. Early detection and timely treatment are essential.

Medical Retina Services

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

We diagnose and manage both dry and wet AMD with personalized treatment strategies:

  • Dry AMD: Characterized by the accumulation of drusen and thinning of the macula over time.
  • Wet AMD: Caused by abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina. Rapid progression makes early intervention critical.

Intravitreal Injections

Intravitreal therapy is a cornerstone of modern medical retina care. At ELZA, we use intravitreal injections to treat:

  • Wet AMD
  • Diabetic macular edema
  • Retinal vein occlusion
  • Geographic atrophy (Syfovre®)

Injections are performed under sterile conditions with high patient comfort and safety.

Geographic Atrophy Treatment – Pegcetacoplan (Syfovre®)

Geographic Atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of dry AMD. Until recently, no treatment could alter its course. ELZA now offers pegcetacoplan (Syfovre®)—the first FDA- and EMA-approved treatment to slow GA progression. Delivered via intravitreal injection, Syfovre® works by inhibiting complement factor C3, thereby reducing inflammation and retinal cell loss.

Surgical Retina Services

ELZA offers a range of vitreoretinal surgical procedures, including:

  • Retinal Detachment Repair
  • Vitrectomy for Vitreous Hemorrhage
  • Macular Hole and Epiretinal Membrane Surgery
  • Complex Vitreoretinal Procedures (e.g., trauma, diabetic tractional detachments)

Dr. Oleñik Memmel trained in Paraguay and Spain and brings a comprehensive approach to medical and surgical retina care.
