The Congreso Córnea Colombia provided an important platform for scientific exchange, and the warm hospitality of the Colombian community made the experience particularly meaningful. ELZA is committed to supporting international collaboration in corneal research and clinical care, with the goal of improving patient outcomes worldwide, and presenting at congresses is a central part of achieving that.

The ELZA Institute was honored to have their Senior Cornea, Cataract and Refractive surgeon, Dr. Emilio Torres-Netto MD, PhD, FWCRS participate in the IV Congreso Córnea Colombia, held on July 25–26, 2025, in Cartagena. This meeting brought together leading corneal specialists from across Latin America and the world to exchange knowledge and explore innovations in the management of keratoconus and other corneal diseases.

Across two days, Dr. Torres-Netto delivered seven presentations covering both established and emerging approaches to corneal disease management. His talks addressed the practical challenges of tailoring corneal cross-linking (CXL) to individual patients, with emphasis on how to navigate the increasing number of available protocols. He introduced PACE-CXL, a PTK-assisted customized epi-on approach designed to enhance treatment precision, and presented the concept of ECO-CAIRS, which applies extracorporeal optimization to allogenic ring segments prior to implantation.

Additional presentations included the role of excimer laser surface ablation in therapeutic refractive surgery for keratoconus, and strategies for cataract surgery in eyes with irregular corneas, focusing on IOL calculation and surgical planning. He also highlighted how new techniques can expand the possibilities for visual rehabilitation in advanced keratoconus.

Dr. Emilio Torres-Netto represented the ELZA Institute as part of the international faculty. He joined colleagues from India, Brazil, Spain, the United Kingdom, Costa Rica, and Thailand in sharing expertise and engaging with the Colombian ophthalmic community.

Finally, Dr. Torres-Netto participated in an expert panel discussion on the Global Consensus on Keratoconus, sharing preliminary findings and insights from this ongoing collaborative effort.
