Dr. Emilio Torres-Netto of ELZA Institute Receives AAO Achievement Award at 2024 Annual Meeting

Dr. Emilio Torres-Netto, MD, PhD, FWCRS, a leading cornea, refractive, and cataract surgeon at the ELZA Institute, was awarded the prestigious AAO Achievement Award at the 2024 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting in Chicago. This follows his recognition in 2023 when he received the Waring Memorial Award from the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), highlighting his pioneering contributions to refractive surgery and corneal biomechanics.

The AAO Achievement Award is a significant recognition in the field of ophthalmology, given to individuals who have demonstrated sustained contributions to the academy’s mission. These include educational efforts, research, and service that have advanced the field. Dr. Torres-Netto’s achievements in refractive surgery, particularly in keratoconus research and corneal crosslinking, have placed him at the forefront of clinical innovation. His work, especially in the area of corneal biomechanics and improving treatments for keratoconus, has earned him recognition both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Torres-Netto’s research, conducted at the ELZA Institute and the University of Zurich, focuses on improving patient outcomes by advancing new surgical techniques and understanding corneal disease mechanisms. His efforts to integrate scientific discovery with clinical application have greatly impacted the development of treatments for corneal conditions, particularly for those with complex refractive issues.

In reflecting on this latest recognition, Dr. Torres-Netto stated: “I’m honored to receive the AAO Achievement Award. It is a privilege to be part of a global community committed to advancing patient care and ophthalmic science. This award is a reflection of the collaborative work in our field and the dedication of many colleagues.” The award is given for awardees for “their contributions made to the Academy, its scientific and educational programs, and to ophthalmology”

The ELZA Institute congratulates Dr. Torres-Netto on this well-deserved recognition and acknowledges his continuous contributions to advancing ophthalmic science and improving patient care. This award reaffirms his role as a leader in the field, with a lasting impact on both academic research and clinical practice.
