Waring Memorial Award 2023
The ELZA Institute, a centre of ophthalmological innovation, proudly announces that the work of our highly regarded colleague, Dr. Emilio A. Torres-Netto MD, PhD, FWCRS, has been recognised with the 2023 Waring Memorial Award. This prestigious accolade is presented by the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) to an early-career member who has shown remarkable commitment to the society and the broader field of refractive surgery.
Dr. Torres-Netto’s journey in ophthalmology is marked by an unwavering dedication to advancing knowledge and practice in this field. Educated in Brazil, the United States, France, and Switzerland, he has developed a multifaceted expertise in cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery.
At the ELZA Institute and the University of Zurich, he has been instrumental in pioneering research and clinical approaches for keratoconus, corneal crosslinking, corneal biomechanics, and refractive surgery. His contributions extend well beyond the boundaries of our institute, impacting the global ophthalmological community.
His accolades include 17 national and international awards, underscoring his excellence and commitment to ophthalmology. Notably, in 2018, he was the inaugural World Winner of the International Council of Ophthalmology Award for his insightful research on corneal biomechanics. In 2022, the Brazilian Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery honored him with the José Ignácio Barraquer Medal for his significant contributions to corneal and refractive surgery. Additionally, his influence as a key opinion leader in ophthalmology has been recognized globally, with his inclusion in the prestigious list of the 50 global key opinion leaders in 2021 and 2023. The Waring Memorial Award is the latest in a long list of awards recognising the quality of his work.
Dr. Torres-Netto’s academic contributions are equally remarkable. He has authored 50 peer-reviewed articles, contributed to 51 publications/interviews, and penned 15 book chapters. His role as a reviewer for multiple international journals and as a member of editorial boards and committees further exemplifies his commitment to advancing ophthalmological knowledge.
