If there is a massive, rapidly increasing and very painful swelling of the eyelids during the first 24 hours after the operation and / or if visibility is impaired, call us immediately. It could be that a blood vessel continues to bleed after the wound closure and the blood exerts a strong pressure in the eye socket, which is extremely rare.
Sutures are typically removed after 6–7 days. Until then, use only medically prescribed ointments. Avoid all creams and make-up.
For 3 days after suture removal, do not use any ointments or creams. Starting from day 10, apply scar cream once daily.
You may gently blot your eyelids with mineral water and cotton pads. Encrustation and watery discharge are normal signs of healing.
Itchy eyelids are common and indicate the healing process is underway.
Do not take Aspirin after surgery, as it thins the blood and may cause bleeding. Use Ponstan or Dafalgan if needed.
Following eyelid surgery, the tear film may be disrupted, leading to watery, burning, or scratchy sensations. Use moisturizing drops or gels for relief.
Bruising around the eyes—especially in smokers or older patients—is common and usually fades within 10–14 days.
For upper eyelids, the suture often lies within the crease and is typically only visible on the outer edge after about 14 days.
Swelling may cause the eyelids to look slightly smaller at first. This is temporary and usually resolves within a few weeks.
Some individuals may develop more noticeable scars, especially those with strong wound healing responses. Darker skin tones tend to scar more visibly than lighter ones.
The outer corner of the eyelid may remain sensitive to pressure for several months due to the high number of nerves in this area.
In certain procedures, a skin graft may be used. Over time, the grafted skin may appear slightly different in color compared to the surrounding tissue.
