Last week saw the publication of “Visual Rehabilitation with Mini Scleral Contact Lenses” in the Journal Français d’Ophtalmologie. The study was first-authored by ELZA’s lead optometrist, Léonard Kollros. The research focused on patients with corneal scarring, which can occur due to various causes such as trauma, infection, or surgical procedures.

The research investigated the effectiveness of mini scleral contact lenses in visual rehabilitation for patients with scarred corneas. These lenses are designed to vault over the cornea, providing a smooth refractive surface and improving visual acuity by mitigating the irregularities caused by scarring.

Corneal scarring often leads to significant visual impairment, and traditional contact lenses or glasses may not provide adequate correction. Mini scleral contact lenses offer a promising alternative by providing better stability, comfort, and visual acuity for patients with irregular corneas.

The research demonstrated that these scleral contact lenses significantly improved visual acuity and patient comfort in those with corneal scarring. The lenses were well-tolerated, and patients reported high levels of satisfaction with their visual outcomes. The study supports the use of these lenses as an effective method for visual rehabilitation in individuals with scarred corneas, highlighting the importance of tailored contact lens solutions in managing complex corneal conditions.

This study provides valuable insights into alternative treatments for corneal scarring. By offering a non-surgical option that improves vision and comfort, scleral lenses can enhance the quality of life for patients with otherwise challenging visual impairments. Future research could further explore long-term outcomes and compare scleral contact lenses like these with other rehabilitative options to solidify their role in ophthalmic care.

Léonard Kollros is a highly experienced scleral lens fitter and has measured and fitted almost every scleral lens at ELZA. If you’d like to learn about how scleral lenses can improve your vision, why not get in contact now or make an appointment?
