ELZA at SILMO Academy Bali 2026: Prof. Daniela Nosch on Patient-Centred Eye Care
From April 6 to 8, 2026, the SILMO Academy Congress Bali brought together clinicians, researchers and educators from Europe, Asia and Oceania. Among the invited speakers was Prof. Daniela S. Nosch, optometrist at the ELZA Institute and professor at the Institute of Optometry (FHNW, Switzerland).
Global exchange on patient-centred eye care
The SILMO Academy Congress in Bali provided a platform for interdisciplinary discussion on patient-centred care across different healthcare systems. Key topics included communication with patients, support for neuro-diverse individuals, and the provision of eye care services for ageing populations.
As highlighted during the sessions, patient-centred care requires not only clinical expertise but also structured communication strategies and awareness of individual patient needs. Contributions from international speakers addressed both clinical and behavioural aspects of care delivery.
Swiss perspectives in an international context
During her presentation, Prof. Nosch provided practical examples from Switzerland, illustrating how structured optometric care can support ageing populations. These examples included access to regular eye examinations, integration of optometry within broader healthcare pathways, and the role of environmental factors such as lighting in maintaining visual function in older patients.
These insights demonstrated how national healthcare frameworks can inform international approaches, particularly in settings where ageing demographics are placing increasing demands on eye care services.
Contribution of Prof. Daniela Nosch
Prof. Nosch contributed to a session focused on patient-centred care, addressing the role of optometry in delivering essential services across the lifespan. Her presentation aligned with discussions on resolving conflicts with patients, supporting neuro-diverse individuals, and ensuring access to care for vulnerable populations.
At the ELZA Institute, her clinical work includes contact lens fitting for irregular corneas, dry eye management, and myopia control. Her involvement in international congresses reflects the integration of clinical practice with academic research.
Acknowledgements
Prof. Nosch expressed her appreciation for the organisation of the meeting and the contributions of fellow speakers. In particular, she thanked Elaine Grisdale for the organisation of the congress, as well as Richard Edwards, Lana Delambre, and Fiona Fylan for their contributions to the session on patient-centred care.
ELZA and international collaboration
Participation in international scientific meetings remains an important component of ELZA’s clinical and academic activities. Engagement in forums such as the SILMO Academy Congress supports the continuous integration of current evidence and global perspectives into clinical practice in Zurich.
