In science, there is a mantra: “publish or perish”. However, there are almost 30,000 academic journals, and quantity does not equal quality. One of the most important indicators of the quality of a scientific or medical paper is if others cite it in their own work. Yang et al. (1) decided to perform a “bibliometric analysis” on the top 100 most-cited articles in the keratoconus literature, it revealed who the names of the people on what could arguably be the most important papers in the field. One of the top 5 authors was ELZA’s Medical Director, Prof. Farhad Hafezi. This is accolade is in addition to the fact that earlier this year, the authors of a similar bibliometric analysis found Prof. Hafezi to be the #1 author in corneal cross-linking (CXL) (2), in addition to his high ranking in the keratoconus literature.
