Corneal Surgery

Members of ELZA have been instrumental in improving current technology used to reshape and repair the human cornea, having helped develop corneal cross-linking (CXL) and some of the laser ablation profiles used in Excimer lasers. We are also heavily involved in research on this topic and teach numerous times throughout the year in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
Our Experience

Global experts in cornea

When it comes to corneal surgery in Zurich, the ELZA Institute has the expertise to give you the highest standard of care. We have global experts like Prof. Farhad Hafezi, Dr. Lamis Baydoun and Dr. Emilio Torres-Netto who have many years of experience with corneal diseases and surgeries. We regularly welcome guest surgeons at ELZA and we have taught many other surgeons in Europe and around the world to perform these procedures. This is why patients come from all over Switzerland – and the world – to ELZA for advanced corneal assessments and cornea surgery in Zurich.

Improving vision after Radial Keratotomy (RK)

Radial keratotomy was a surgical treatment in the 1980s and 1990s, before the modern excimer lasers were developed. Deep cuts were performed in the cornea to correct for myopia. Unfortunately, many of the patients treated now suffer from long-term consequences that are hard to treat. The ELZA Institute has invented a new surgical approach that may reverse the over-flattening that occurs in many patients who had previously undergone radial keratotomy (RK) surgery, in a procedure called STARK.

Corneal Surgery: Pterygium Removal

A pterygium often creates a large amount of traction on the cornea. The resulting irregular astigmatism reduces visual quality, something we can fix. We remove the pterygium using the latest no-stitch free conjunctival transplantation techniques. Then, we smoothen and regularize the corneal surface to improve your vision.

Corneal Surgery: Salzmann Degeneration

These nodules are collagen deposits on the cornea that can distort the cornea, make it less transparent or both. We have a long-standing experience of surgically removing Salzmann nodules. Later, we smoothen the corneal surface using an excimer laser to improve your vision.

Improving Terrien’s Marginal Degeneration (TMD)

TMD is a disease where the cornea gets thinner and thinner and the periphery, with drastic changes in vision. The ELZA Institute were the first in the world to successfully treat Terrien Marginal Degeneration with CXL.

Corneal infection

Corneal infection with bacteria, fungi or parasites (called infectious keratitis) is one of the leading causes of global blindness. ELZA members are the pioneers of PACK-CXL – photoactivated chromophore for keratitis-CXL – a treatment for corneal infections that does not depend on antibiotics or antifungal drugs to kill pathogens. We were able to show in a large multinational study led by us that a single treatment of PACK-CXL is as effective as multiple days of hourly antibiotic treatment to treat small to mid-size infectious ulcers.

Cornea and hormonal changes

Has your vision changed and are you pregnant or do you suffer from changes in your thyroid gland? Several hormones such as estrogen and thyroid hormone can change the stability of the cornea. Our surgeons and researchers have worked extensively on this topic, which has been integrated into the “EyeWiki” of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, read here.

Corneal Surgery: Corneal transplantation

The ELZA Institute has two world-renowned corneal surgeons: Dr. Lamis Baydoun, and Dr. Emilio Torres-Netto. They are experts in performing several types of corneal transplantation surgery in Zurich, including full-thickness corneal transplants (penetrating keratoplasty), lamellar transplants, and DMEK for Fuchs’ dystrophy and Cornea guttata.
