Why did the Journal of Refractive surgery publish “The Most Cited Articles and Authors in Refractive Surgery” in this month’s issue?
Refractive surgery has revolutionized ophthalmology – and people’s lives – by providing a permanent solution to visual impairment. As with any medical specialty, it is essential to recognize the contributions of the researchers and physicians who have developed the field. A recent study published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery aimed to identify the most cited articles and authors in refractive surgery using the Scopus database and a publicly available database of more than 100,000 scientists. The study identified the top 100 most cited articles in refractive surgery and the 40 authors with the highest composite indicator (C score) related to refractive surgery. ELZA’s Medical Director, Prof. Farhad Hafezi, was one of the top 100, with his highest-ranked paper coming in at #22.
Prof. Hafezi, who has published extensively in the field of refractive surgery, was honored and humbled to be listed among some of the greatest names in the field. “I am honored and humbled that my name is listed among some of the greatest names in refractive surgery,” Prof. Hafezi said.
The study revealed that laser in situ keratomileusis (22), photorefractive keratectomy (18), and postoperative corneal ectasia and/or corneal biomechanics (16) were the most represented topics in the top 100 cited articles. The peak publication years were from 1998 to 2001, with Emory University generating the most articles (7) and the majority of publications (48%) originating from the United States.
The authors on the list had an average of 97 refractive surgery publications, with 35% of the group having more than 100 refractive surgery articles published. Additionally, all authors on the list had more than 2,000 citations for their refractive surgery articles, with 38% having 4,000 or more citations. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the most highly cited articles and authors in refractive surgery, shedding light on the significant contributions of researchers and physicians to the field, and we are proud to see the contributions made by Prof. Hafezi recognized in this way.
