Let’s delve into the insightful presentations given by two of ELZA’s finest surgeons during ELZA at Swiss Ophthalmological Society (SSO)’s Swiss Eye Week 2024, highlighting the contributions of ELZA’s Medical Director, Prof. Farhad Hafezi and consultant glaucoma surgeon, Prof. Kaweh Mansouri on Wednesday, January 17th, 2024. The conference was held to educate Switzerland’s up and coming ophthalmology residents, and is a highly anticipated meeting each year. This year, the meeting was held at that Belvédère Strandhotel, Spiez.
Prof. Hafezi gave his first presentation on the topic of “Conjunctiva and Cornea,” exploring the latest corneal shape, strucutire, function, and corneal biomechanics. His session on “Therapeutic Refractive Surgery” provided an overview of the principles of PTK, PRK, LASIK and SMILE, and modern ways of performing refractive surgery to treat keratoconus and scars, in addition to how they are used to correct refractive errors as part of “cosmetic” eye laser surgery, where he emphasized both patient safety and outcome optimization, and at certain points, taking the opportunity the work the ELZA Institute has done to advance the field.
Kaweh Mansouri’s presentations covered three significant areas. The “Aqueous Humor Dynamics” session delved into the physiology of aqueous humor, its role in intraocular pressure regulation, and the implications for glaucoma treatment. His talk on “Perimetry” focused on visual field testing, a critical component in glaucoma diagnosis and management. This non-invasive diagnostic tool assists in evaluating the functional impact of glaucoma on vision. Finally, his “Glaucoma” presentation provided a comprehensive overview of this complex condition, discussing the latest diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, with a focus on patient-centric care and management strategies.
These sessions at Swiss Eye Week 2024 offered valuable insights into current trends and future directions in ophthalmology for Swiss ophthalmology residents, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and innovation in this field.
