ELZA’s consultant oculoplastic surgeon, Dr. Dr. Dion Paridaens, spent the last weekend in Tunis, as an invited speaker at the Société Tunisienne d’Ophtalmologie (STO) Annual Meeting. This highly regarded event gave Dr. Paridaens a platform to discuss on functional and aesthetic aspects of eyelid surgery – a field where he is a world-recognized authority.
At the meeting, Dr. Paridaens’ two invited lectures were “Upper Eyelid and Medial Canthal Reconstruction” and “Lateral Canthal Fixation in Transcutaneous Lower Blepharoplasty.” These presentations focused on the intricate techniques involved in reconstructing these delicate regions around the eyes, which are not only crucial for both functional integrity of the eyelids, but also cosmesis – the restoration of cosmetic appeal.
In addition to sharing his expertise through lectures, Dr. Paridaens also moderated an engaging session that included presentations in both French and English on oculoplastic surgery. Furthermore, the 41st STO Annual Meeting paved the way for a collaborative future between the European Society Of Ophthalmic Plastic And Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS), represented by Dr. Paridaens, and the African Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AFSOPRS), represented by Dr. Mehmed Fendri. Both parties have expressed a mutual interest in forming a partnership to advance education and research in the realm of ophthalmology.
Dr. Paridaens’ contribution to the field extends beyond the conference halls. His work in the ELZA Institute in Zurich and the Focusclinic at the Rotterdam Eye Hospital has been pivotal in treating patients worldwide with complex medical or cosmetic indications for oculoplastic surgery. His role in training the next generation of oculoplastic surgeons, as demonstrated by his leadership in the Rotterdam Eye Hospital’s residency program, is another testament to his dedication to the field.
